🌿 Days 1–4: The Rainforest: Adventure, Culture & Connection

Day 1 – Into the Green 🌿🚐

Route: Paramaribo → Afobaka Reservoir
Distance: ±130 km | Departure: 10:00

Leave the bustle of Paramaribo behind as you travel south to Afobaka, where the lush interior opens up before you.

Upon arrival at the tranquil reservoir, you can swim in calm, clear waters, relax on the riverbank, or explore the nearby Afobaka hydrodam—one of Suriname’s most important energy sources.

A slow and easy start, perfect to ease into jungle time.

Day 2 – Through Rivers to the Village 🛶🏞️

Route: Afobaka → Pikin Slee → Kumalu
Distance: ±70 km (road & river) | Departure: 09:00

Your adventure takes you deeper into the rainforest. Travel by road and then switch to boat as you glide through winding rivers surrounded by dense jungle.

Stop in Pikin Slee to visit the Marron Museum—where history, art, and identity of the Saramaccan people come alive.

In the afternoon, arrive in Kumalu, your home base for the next few days—remote, warm, and full of life.

Day 3 – Mountain Trails & Village Kitchen 🍍👩🏽‍🍳

Location: Kumalu

Begin the day with a guided hike to the top of Ananasberg, a local hill covered in wild pineapples, offering sweeping views over the rainforest canopy.

After a well-earned rest, you’ll join the women of the village to prepare a traditional Surinamese meal—an authentic and delicious insight into daily life and culture.

Day 4 – Water, Wildlife & Wonder 🐍🚣‍♂️

Location: Kumalu

A full day of jungle adventure awaits. In the morning, enjoy river-based activities like paddling or floating through quiet streams.

Later, take a guided village tour to learn about Saramaccan customs and crafts.

As night falls, join your guide for an unforgettable wildlife experience—searching for caimans, snakes, frogs, and other nighttime creatures deep in the rainforest.

The first half of your journey brings you deep into Suriname’s untouched interior.

Starting with a peaceful swim at Afobaka, you’ll journey by river to remote villages like Kumalu and Pikin Slee.

Here, jungle adventures meet warm cultural exchanges—from hiking pineapple hills and learning traditional cooking to spotting nocturnal creatures by boat.

It’s the wild, soulful side of Suriname few get to experience.

Day 5 – Back to the Capital ⛴️🏙️

Route: Kumalu → Paramaribo
Distance: ±200 km (boat + road) | Departure: 08:00

Say goodbye to Kumalu and its warm community. Travel back via boat and road to Paramaribo, arriving in the afternoon. Take time to relax, explore the waterfront, or try some street food before getting a good night’s rest in the capital.

Day 6 – Cycle Through History 🚲🏛️

Location: Paramaribo

Explore the colonial heart of Paramaribo by bike. Discover UNESCO-listed wooden buildings, old cathedrals, mosques and synagogues standing side by side, and lively markets filled with color and spices. Your local guide brings the stories of the city’s diverse past—and present—to life.

Day 7 – River Dolphins & Sea Giants 🐬🐢

Route: Paramaribo → Commewijne River → Matapica Beach (seasonal)

In the morning, head to the rivers of Commewijne, where playful pink river dolphins dance near your boat.

Then travel toward the Atlantic coast to visit one of Suriname’s sea turtle nesting beaches (seasonal: Feb–July).

Walk along the beach as the sun sets and, if you’re lucky, witness these majestic creatures laying eggs—a rare and moving moment in nature.

Day 8 – Departure Day 🧳👋

Route: Paramaribo → Airport

Enjoy your final breakfast in Paramaribo before your transfer to the airport. Take with you the sounds of the rainforest, the warmth of local hospitality, and a deeper understanding of Suriname’s vibrant heart.

Suriname, you impressed me. I didn’t know what to aspect but I had always been curious about this country. A country with a lot of beautiful nature and a lot of different culture and most of all a huge history. We made a trip to the jungle with our guide and our private driver and cook. Benny’s Culinary Magic: A Foodie’s Dream Come True - If I had to name one unexpected highlight of this trip, it would be the food. And that’s all thanks to Benny, our head chef and culinary wizard. Every meal was an explosion of flavors, unlike anything I had ever tasted before. His Cassava soup with coconut milk? Rich, creamy, and pure comfort in a bowl. His Ja Zeker? A dish I had never even heard of before this trip, but now I’m obsessed.
